European Innovation Council

Main principles

The overall objective of the EIC is to identify, develop and deploy high risk innovations of all kind with a particular focus on breakthrough, market-creating and deep-tech innovations. It aims to support the rapid scale up of innovative technologies and companies (mainly start-ups and SMEs) at EU and international level along the pathway from ideas to market

type of grant available

The EIC Pathfinder comprises the Pathfinder Open and Pathfinder Challenges schemes. Pathfinder Open supports the early-stages of the science and technology research and innovation around new ideas towards radically new future technologies. Pathfinder Challenges supports cutting edge-high-risk/ high reward research and innovation projects that aim to firmly establish the future potential of a new and promising demonstrate a new technological paradigm within a predefined scope.

EIC Transition funds innovation activities that go beyond the experimental proof of principle in laboratory. It supports both the maturation and validation of your novel technology in the lab and in relevant application environments (by making use of prototyping, formulation, models, user testing or other validation tests) as well as the development of a business case and business model towards the innovation’s future commercialisation

EIC Accelerator supports companies (principally start-ups and SMEs) to scale up high impact innovations with the potential to create new markets or disrupt existing ones. The EIC Accelerator focuses in particular on innovations building on scientific discovery or technological breakthroughs (‘deep tech’) and where significant funding is needed over a long timeframe before returns can be generated (‘patient capital’).
